This album consists of photographs of historic wallpapers, and it was compiled and annotated by Howard Livingstone Shurtleff of Boston, Mass. Many of the wallpapers documented are mural style, and some are in the style of Rufus Porter. Some of the photographs have been attached to eachother, creating larger panoramas of wallpaper. Shurtleff's annotations have been made on tissue paper which has been attached over the photographs.

Pasted to the inner front cover of the album is the following note from the donor: "The photographs of wallpaper patterns and notes were made by my uncle Howard Livingstone Shurtleff (born about 1860 and oldest brother of my father, Arthur A. Shurcliff). The dates when photos were taken may have been the early 1900s or earlier. Uncle Howard never married. He lived with his parents (Asahel Milton Shurtleff and Sarah Ann Keegan) at 9 West Cedar St., a house they rented for some 30 or more years."
