Waltham, The Vale, 1884.13 photographs by Augustine H. Folsom of the exterior and landscaping of the Vale. The taking of these photographs may have coincided with a visit to the Vale by painter Frank Duveneck, whose subsequent landscapes reflect - though only generically - the configuration of some of these views. The quality of Folsom's work in this album is distinctly more "poetic" than his usual work, raising the possibility (unproven) that Duveneck orchestrated the viewpoints and pictorial effects he wanted. The photographs were taken shortly after the family of Arthur and Ella Lyman purchased the Vale for use as a summer (or six-month) residence from Arthur's brother George. For further discussion of this move, and of Arthur Lyman's deep devotion to the Vale, please see the 3-volume work by Ella Lyman Cabot compiled from family letters and other documents. This is located at the Vale.
