Description

Album titled "Mental Photographs: An Album for Confessions of Tastes, Habits, and Convictions" belonging to Elizabeth J. Gilman. This is the cartes-de-visite edition of the album meant to hold "76 Photographs of 23 questions each," although the album contains no cartes-de-visites. The album was published in 1874 by publisher Henry Holt and Company in New York City, New York, and edited by Robert Saxton. The album contains a number of entries dated between 1874 and 1879, most notably an entry by Sarah Orne Jewett in February 1876. For each entry, individuals answered questions such as their favorite color, favorite hour in the day, motto, and their idea of happiness. Other entries are from chemist Henry A. Huston, sister of Sarah Orne Jewett Caroline "Carrie" A. Jewett and her husband Edwin Eastman, Susan "Susie" J. Jewett, Harriet L. Vose, one of many pseudonyms for author Harriet Bates, and lawyer Edgar Oakes Achorn.
