The grant provides $250,000 for a three-year period for Historic New England to pilot and scale a paid internship program under the auspices of its Study Center, with the goal to create greater equity and representation within the field. The funds provide an opportunity for interns to discover and be directly involved in the broad range of disciplines, including conservation and collections, fundraising, marketing, preservation, property care, and visitor experience.
The goal is to create greater equity and to build a diverse museum workforce for the future. The program starts this fall and grows each semester through fall of 2027.
With more than a century of leadership in the preservation field, Historic New England has an opportunity and obligation to support the development and mentorship of tomorrow’s museum professionals. That these leaders represent the full diversity of the museum-going audience is critical to ensuring the continued impact and relevance of our cultural institutions.
Historic New England is one of just eight organizations to be awarded grants in the 2024 round of funding. This cycle is the 21st Century Museum Professionals Program’s first call for proposals in more than ten years.
