This essay, presented to the Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers in New York, explains the value of the modern canal with a increased emphasis on that of the Cape Cod Canal. Author J.W. Miller begins his work by telling the history of the canal, dating back to ancient times. He also gives the historical background for the Cape Cod Canal, including the pre-modern ideas of Myles Standish and George Washington. Regarding the Cape Cod Canal itself, Miller details the specific facts and figures about the project as well as its potential for success. At the end of the publication, there is a denoted question and answer section which occurred during Miller's presentation. Also contained at the conclusion of the publication is a series of illustrations, primarily maps.
