This series contains the papers of members of the Appleton and Weld families. The majority of the collection relates to Dorothy Appleton Weld and her husband George Francis Weld, Sr., however it also substantially documents Edith Stuart Appleton, Georgiana Armistead Appleton, William Sumner Appleton, Sr., William Sumner Appleton, Jr., and Loretta Barton Weld. Other family members are also represented. The series consists primarily of correspondence between the family members, and it includes correspondence with others, literary materials such as diaries, printed matter, and sketchbooks.

The materials are arranged alphabetically by individuals names. Correspondence is arranged with the person to whom it was addressed, therefore researchers should look through the entire series to find correspondence written by any individual.
