Historical/Biographical Note

Historical/Biographical Note

Born in Londonderry, Ireland and educated at Cusack's Academy in Dublin, Charles Donagh Maginnis (1867-1955) moved to Canada in 1885 at the age of eighteen before settling in Boston, Massachusetts a few years later. In 1890, he began working for the City of Boston architect Edmund M. Wheelwright. In 1898, Maginnis joined with Timothy Francis Walsh (1868-1934) of the firm Peabody and Sterns and Matthew Sullivan to form the architectural firm of Maginnis, Walsh, and Sullivan. In 1905, the firm became Maginnis and Walsh.

Known for their work on ecclesiastical buildings, the firm designed churches, schools, hospitals, and college campus buildings. Though concentrated in the New England area and east coast, they designed buildings throughout the United States and Canada. The Gold Medal for Ecclesiastical Architecture from the American Institute of Architects, was awarded for their design of the Carmelite Convent in Santa Clara, California in 1925 and for the Chapel of Trinity College in Washington, D.C. in 1927. Buildings at Catholic University, Boston College, and Loyola School in New York were also designed by the firm. Also, notably, the firm designed the Nation Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, D.C., the Cathedral of Mary our Queen in Baltimore, Maryland and St. John's Seminary in Brighton, Massachusetts.
