Description

This collection consists of an album compiled by Edwin J. Lewis, Jr. (architect), who worked at 9 Park St in Boston. The album contains elevations, perspective views, and plans rendered in ink and watercolor, and a few photographs and photomechanicals of residences, stables, and garages. The following commissions are identified: residence of Arthur W. Walker, Alpine St.; residence of Winfield S. Lemon, Tremont St.; sketch for a house for Francis S. Gilson, Esq., Charlestown, NH; elevation on Cumberland Ave.; proposed cottages at Plainsville, MA; sketch for a garage for P. Terrile, Esq., Winthrop Highlands; stable of Hon. J.M.Grosvenor, Jr., Swampscott, MA; sketch for a stable for Woodbury Melcher, Esq., North Attleborough, MA; stable for Harry L. Ayer, Esq., West Newton, MA. One of the previously unidentified commissions has been identified as the Massachusetts Pavilion at the 1907 Jamestown Exposition in Jamestown, Virginia. Also included is an application to the Massachusetts Historical Commission to register a home in Brookline that was designed by Lewis.

Born in 1859, Edwin J. Lewis, Jr. was a Roxbury, Mass. native who attended first English High School and then Massachusetts Institute of Technology, graduating in 1881. Following graduation, he worked as an architect for prominent firm Peabody & Stearns until his departure in 1887 to enter private practice. Lewis designed many private homes, including several in the Ashmont neighborhood of Dorchester, Mass. Other known designs include the Dedham Historical Society building (1886-1887) in Dedham, Mass., the Wollaston Unitarian Church (1888) in Quincy, Mass., the Peabody apartment building (1896-1897) in Dorchester, Mass., the Unitarian Church of Houlton (1902) in Houlton, Maine, All Souls Church (1905) in Braintree, Mass., the Dearborn School (1905) in Roxbury, Mass., Second Unitarian Church (1916) in Brookline, Mass., and Hopedale Community House (1922-1923) in Hopedale, Mass., all of which are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. In addition to his building works, Lewis served as secretary of the Boston Society of Architects for more than a decade and was a Fellow of the American Institute of Architects. He was also a member of the Union Club of Boston, a life member of The Bostonian Society, and a member and president of the Dorchester Historical Society. Lewis died in 1937 in Milton, Mass.
