The mezzotint titled "William Shirley" depicts a man dressed in an ornate coat, standing with his hand resting on a surface that has papers on it. There is a curtain behind him and what appears to be a coastal scene with ships in the background. The text at the bottom identifies him as "His Excellency William Shirley Esq.â and provides details about his role as the Captain General and Governor in Chief of the Province of the Massachusetts Bay in New England. It was photographed at the Bostonian society, Old State House, Boston.
