Loose photographs [4 of 4], 1932-1957

Description

Folder four of four containing photographs removed from a blue cachet portfolio. The portfiolio contained 146 loose black-and-white photographs related to displays designed by Kenneth Gray Sears for Shreve, Crump & Low. The majority of the photographs measure 8 x 10 inches, although some are smaller. These photographs show images of sample and completed displays for Shreve, Crump & Low. It is assumed all of the displays pictured were completed by Kenneth Grey Sears. There are also images of construction occuring within a Shreve, Crump & Low space. These photographs are dated 1932-1957 The photographs were taken by various photographers from Massachusetts and New York. Some of the photographs have notes and dates written on the verso.

Displays designed by Sears were for within the store and in the windows. Along with Shreve, Crump & Low goods, the displays featured items from luxury brands such as Baccarat, Hamilton Watch Company, and Mavado. Items featured in the displays include silverware, jewelry, crystal, clothing and accessories, and tableware among others. The displays were often accompanied with other decorative pieces such as flowers, pieces of art, and various fabrics. The photographs of these displays provide insight into the advertising methods used by purveyors of high-end items in Boston from the 1930s to 1950s.
