Papers of Jean McClellan, 1870-1961, undated

Description

Corresponece includes a letter from Constance Holt of Roseland Cottage to Kay Holt on the birth of her son George Chandler Holt III dated 1961and an engraved invitation to exercises commemorating 100 years since the inauguration of George Washington dated, 1889.

A financial document in the sub-series is a receipt dated 1870, for the final payment for the steel plate engraving known as the "First Reading of the Emancipation Proclamation." The letter is in the handwriting of Henry C. Bowen, founder and publisher of The Independent.

10 black-and-white photographs in the series include cabinet cards, a carte-de-visite, a Christmas postcard, and one unmounted family photograph. Most photographs are undated except a carte- de-visite identifying Grace Holt in 1901, a cabinet card identifying Grace, Constance, and Sylia Holt in 1894, and an unmounted photograph of the Holt Family dated 1911. One mounted, undated photograph shows a group of men possibly standing in front of Roseland cottage [as identified by quatrefoil ornaments on the porch roof supports]. Other identified sitters include "Grace and Hamilton", Paul Bowen and George E. McClellan, Clarence Bowen, Pauline Bowen, and Paul Holt Bowen. Photographs are dated 1884-1911 and include several undated photographs.

The sub series also includes a poem by Hamilton Holt, Titled "The Sins of the Fathers" typed on tissue and dated August 19, 1947.
