Description

Half-length portraits of a man and woman on separate canvases, painted to hang side by side. There is contiguous space suggested by a swag curtain at the top. He wears a black suit and white vest; she wears a grey dress with a gold belt buckle and red coral beads, lace collar and cap, and holds a fan. They both drape hands on the sofa back.

On the woman's portriat 1991.943.1 there is red paint on the canvas back that reads: Painted by Royall B. Smith, March 1831. There is a typed red bordered jelly label on 1991.943.1, affixed to the lower right frame back that reads: ""Painted by Royall/B. Smith 1831.""/R.B. Smith, 1801-1849,/Buxton, ME. Named for/Dr. Royall Brewster/of Buxton. Subjects/ unknown.] The same label, same spot only on 1991.943.2 reads: Companion/picture signed/""painted by/Royall B. Smith/1831"" (Buxton/Maine)
