Keeping the Bugs at Bay

Pest infestation is one of the greatest threats to museum collections. Historic New England is a nationally recognized leader in innovative solutions to Integrated Pest Management (IPM). Members can read more about IPM in the Summer 2018 issue of Historic New England magazine. This year, we must raise $41,000 to keep the bugs at bay.

Collection Technician Adam Osgood is Historic New England’s resident expert on IPM. He operates our carbon dioxide pest treatment system for collection objects, known as “the Bubble.” We use this system to treat our own collections, and allow other organizations and individuals to rent it as well.  Below, watch clips of Adam speaking to museum colleagues at an Emergency Response and Disaster Preparedness workshop at Phillips Academy in Andover, Massachusetts, in March 2018.
