Before, Josiah Wolcott was known among only a few as an ornamental and portrait painter working in 19th-century New England. Now, though, Wolcott is known to have been engaged in Fourierism and Associationism, the movements that gave life to the utopian community of Brook Farm. Associationism provided the spark for his hopeful, visionary work that adds an important dimension to Brook Farm scholarship and to an understanding of the movement in New England.
