Description

Nathaniel Hawthorne found inspiration in the Province House of Boston. He saw the building as a symbol of aristocratic pride and opulence and regarded it as an impediment to self-government. From this sprang his "Legends of the Province House," published as a whole in 1842. John S. Garner examines fact and fiction in the stories.
