Description

Subseries E, Special Aid Society for American Preparedness (Salem branch), 1916-1920, undated (#34.1-36.5, 37.1-37.7), contains administrative, financial, and membership records and correspondence for the Society's Salem branch, Lawrence branch, and Massachusetts branch; Anna served as Society treasurer (Salem branch) from 1916-1919. Administrative records include annual reports; clippings; plans for a day camp; blank stationary; and an undated paper, "Practical War Time Recipes" (#36.3). Correspondence includes general administrative correspondence received during World War I (1914-1918); a 1917 annual report from the Salem Normal School Special Aid Society branch (#35.12); a roster for Company H Regiment Massachusetts Infantry (#35.12) containing a list of clothing articles and a description of daily life at Camp Plattsburg in New York; and a pamphlet for the American Women's Hospitals (#36.1). Financial records include bank statements; check registers and deposit slips; financial ledgers reflecting donations and dues paid; receipts and receipt books; pin money reports; and treasurer's reports. Membership records include the Society's Constitution and bylaws; membership lists (one arranged alphabetically by surname; one arranged by district and street address; and two bound books noted as "secretary's book" listing members with addresses); membership pamphlets; membership registration cards and files noting skills and completed courses such as First Aid, etc.; notices for dues; fact cards (#35.5) on the flag of the United States of America (printed and sold to aid school children in learning the symbolism of the U.S. flag); and related material. The subseries is arranged alphabetically by topic, then by record type, and thereunder chronologically.
