Description

Design drawing titled "Design for a Library. School of the Museum of Fine Arts." rendered in watercolor and pencil. Interior elevation is shown. Drawing depicts one wall of a Classical Revival-style room with large crown molding, plain frieze, and three banks of windows. Center set of windows has six rows of panes arranged in a six-over-six, eighteen-over eighteen and six-over-six plan. Both side sets of windows feature stained glass with muntins in an oval and diamond pattern. The three sets of windows are separated by two sets of two projecting columns on large bases; single columns are at each end. Window architraves have carved or applied rosettes and foliate garlands. Rectangular bases below columns have carved or applied foliate wreaths. A knee-hole desk with three drawers on left and one cabinet on riight is placed beneath center windows. TItle and "C. F. Richter" are hand printed on drawing.

A Carl Theodore Helmut Richter is listed in the 1880 United States census as employed as an architect and living in Dedham, MA. The municipal records of Dedham show that he died on September 7, 1898. His wife Louisa is listed as a widow in the 1900 federal census. The 1895 Boston city directory lists a Charles Richter as being employed as a designer working at 96 Washington Street, the address of A. H. Davenport Co.
