Description

Design drawing titled "Chair Painted Black with Decoration in Color and Gold" with two views. Front view is rendered in watercolor and pencil; side view is in pencil only. Fancy-style side chair has rectangular scrolling crest rail; horizontal splat of two lyres flanking an ellongated quatrefoil; curved back; scrolled front seat rail; raked tapered square rear legs; turned ball and vasiform front legs with cuffs; turned side stretchers; and shaped front stretcher. Chair is painted black and has extensive painted and gilded decoration including flowers and foliage on crest; banding on crest and stiles, and four-lobed foliate motifs on splat and front stretcher. Title and scale are handwritten on drawing. Embossed on lower left corner is "Return to / A. H. Davenport Co. / 96 Washington St. / Boston, Mass."
