Description

Untitled scrapbook. Scrapbook has red fabric cover and is held together by twine laced through six eyelets. The number "23" is handwritten on spine. Scrapbook contains 50 pages, five of which are blank. The bulk of the materials are clippings from 19th century and 20th century periodicals, catalogs, and magazines, such as "Arts and Decoration," "House and Garden," "Country Life," 'Good Furniture," "Furniture Age," "The Architectural Forum," and "The American Architect." The clippings document a wide variety of church interiors and church furnishings in the United States and Europe. Also included between the pages are loose pages from the July 1920 issue of "Architecture." Digital images of a selection of items from the scrapbook are attached to this record.

A number of the churches shown in the scrapbook were clients of A. H. Davenport Co., Irving and Casson or Irving and Casson - A. H. Davenport; however, it is not known what portion of the work depicted in the clippings was produced by these companies. Known clients include: Carmelite Monastery of San Francisco (Santa Clara, CA); Cathedral of St. John the Divine (New York, NY); Chapel of the Mediator (Philadelphia, PA); Emmanuel Church (Baltimore, MD); First Baptist Church (Pittsburgh, PA); Park Avenue Baptist Church (New York, NY); St. Andrew Chapel of St. James' Church (Chicago, IL); St. Catherine's Church (Somerville, MA); St. Luke's Church (East Hampton, NY); St. Mark's Church (Mt. Kisco, NY); St. Patrick's Church (Huntington, NY); St. Paul's School (Concord, NH); St. Thomas' Church (New York, NY); and Trinity Church (New York).

A partial list of other locations depicted in the scrapbook is as follows: Anthony's Church (Van Nest, NY); Baptist Church (Pittsburgh, PA; New York, NY); Calvary Church (Pittsburgh, PA); Chicago Temple (Chicago, IL); Church of the Holy Spirit (Florence, Italy); Church of St. Augustine (Pendlebury, England); Church of St. Maria Novello (Florence, Italy); Church of the Martyrs (Palermo, Italy); Church of the Sacred Heart (Washington, D.C.); First Parish Church (Cambridge, MA); Lady Chapel (Downside Abbey, England); Palma Cathedral (Palma de Mallorca, Spain); Pembroke College, St. Giles' Cathedral (Edinburgh, Scotland); St. John's (West Hartford, CT); St. Michael's Church (Littlefield, CT); St. Patrick's Cathedral (Dublin, Ireland); and St. Paul's Cathedral (Detroit, MI).
