Description

This exterior elevation in ink and watercolor on heavy paper presents the front facade of the William Wilkins Warren House in Arlington, Massachusetts. Edward Shaw designed the house in the Greek Revival style. In his autobiography, Warren states that, after returning to Boston from St. Thomas in May 1840, he "purchased from my brother-in-law, William Schouler, a five-acre lot bordering on Spy Pond in West Cambridge. This was laid out on a plan I had drawn while at sea; a Doric villa was erected and hundreds of trees and shrubs set out the same year, the whole being completed so that we we were in full enjoyment of it the spring following. The place was much admired, and from its novel construction was called the West-India House."
