The flower in the design is a Commelina, common names for which include Day Flower, Widow's Tears and Spiderwort. There are about 170 species of Commelina (most blue-flowered) some of which are native to the US.

The Day Flower design was created by our museum's namesake, Charles E. Burchfield, and should be dated c. 1924-25. There is another colorway in our collection. Love to see the design exists elsewhere!
