Description

Three-quarter length standing pose of man (similar to Portrait of Richard Waldron (1966.239)). Possibly either Dorcas Peggy or Thomas Newman, though identity of sitter is uncertain. Elaborate brocade waistcoat with dark brown floral pattern on creme-colored ground. Subject wears blue-gray coat and white shirt with ruffle at neck and cuffs. Subject's right hand rests on table, in left he holds blank paper. At upper right is view of Christ Church (Old North Church) of Boston and an eighteenth century house, possibly owned by John Gould. Black frame, with gilt border next to canvas.
