Label

These modillions (the ornamental blocks that sit under a cornice) came from the Massachusetts State House designed by Charles Bulfinch. Family lore states that they were once featured on the portico. They likely were removed during the 1895 expansion of the building.

Historic New England also has a pilaster capital fragment from the State House, also removed in the nineteenth century (1985.655).
