Video: How the Bauhaus philosophy applies to conversations we are having today

Aug 9, 2022

Join Historic New England Team Leader Peter Gittleman and Site Manager Wendy Hubbard for a discussion about the use and reinterpretation of traditional New England design at Gropius House in Lincoln, Mass.

Although established in the early twentieth century, the principles of the Bauhaus philosophy continue to be relevant today. When the Gropius House was built in 1938, it incorporated many design strategies such as climate control, green or sustainable design, and conservation of resources. All of these topics have returned to importance in the 21st century.

The design of Gropius House is consistent with Bauhaus philosophies of simplicity, functionality, economy, geometry, and aesthetic beauty determined by materials rather than applied ornamentation.
