Prestigious 2023 AASLH Award of Excellence for More Than a Market

Aug 17, 2023

Historic New England received a American Association for State and Local History (AASLH) Award of Excellence for More than a Market: Food, Community, and Family in the Markets of Burlington and Winooski, Vermont.

About More Than a Market

More than a Market was a multi-year project that shared immigrant experiences through the lens of past and present-day food markets operated by new Americans. Oral histories and archival research provided content for a website, walking tour, and an exhibit that was on display from June 2022 through May 2023 at the Old North End Community Center in Burlington.

Conversations with the descendants of early market owners and with current market owners and their customers revealed how these markets provide physical and emotional sustenance through access to traditional foods, community connection, and social support.

While the exhibition was on display, written and audio translations in Arabic, Nepali, Somali, and Swahili provided access to those who experienced the contemporary markets. Their words created a bridge between the present and the past experiences of new Americans and reminded visitors of the universal search for belonging and shared values of hard work, family, and community that are part of the country’s ongoing story.
