The Colonial Revival portico at Phillips House in Salem, Massachusetts, frames the massive front door and makes a dramatic first impression on visitors. The house that lies behind more than lives up to the expectation the entry creates. When the columns began to show signs of insect damage, Historic New England staff resolved to stop the decay before additional damage could result.
Property care staff removed the columns and their bases in early September, repaired them in the carpentry shop, and returned them in time for Halloween. In Salem, Halloween is the most important day on the calendar, and hundreds of visitors stopped by Phillips House that day.
