On June 27 at the Salem Farmers’ Market in Massachusetts, Historic New England’s Phillips House Museum was among a number of local businesses and institutions that received a “Shade of Green” from the 2013 Green Salem Business Challenge. In addition to revealing green practices already in place in the communtiy, the challenge helps local businesses—ranging from small bed and breakfasts to hospitals—find ways to make Salem a more environmentally friendly place to conduct business.
Phillips House strives to be as green a historic house museum as possible by using compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs) in office spaces, eco-friendly fonts when printing, and placing a recycling bin next to each trash can. Site Manager Julie Arrison notices the difference: “Each week we put out our recycling bins, but put out one trash can every two to three weeks. For a place that sees hundreds of visitors during peak season, that is an amazing feat.”
