Over the Clothesline: Fashion Inspired by Historic New England Photographs features the work of seven fashion and conceptual artists from Maine and New Hampshire, who created contemporary designs inspired by images from Historic New England’s vast collection of photography. The artists represented in the exhibition include:

Their designs are on display with the photographs that inspired them.

The illustration shown here is Ellida Maryn by artist Anne Collins. The name acknowledges Ellida, the title character of Ibsen’s The Lady From the Sea, and Maryn for Mary H. Northend, the photographer who took the photo of the figurehead circa 1920.

The exhibition is funded in part by the Maine Humanities Council.
