Jul 18, 2019

Historic New England and the New England Watercolor Society are pleased to announce that Seth Berkowitz is the 2019 artist-in-residence at Governor John Langdon House in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. The residency occurs in conjunction with Reality, Abstraction, and the Artist’s Eye, a juried regional exhibition on display at the house.

During August, visitors can get an inside look at an artist’s process. Professionally trained as an architect and landscape architect, Seth has spent time observing, studying, and designing the built and natural environments and has developed drawing and painting skills crafted to these professions. With watercolor as his primary medium, his paintings explore the qualities of light, atmosphere, transparency, and luminosity.

“I like Seth’s ability to take entire scenes of cities and mix them together in a sort of architectural pastiche. His energetic use of color and line to convey buildings and figures seems to be what the energy of Portsmouth is all about, a historic city that is moving and changing and transforming, and bringing people together in a swirling mix,” said Historic New England Regional Site Manager Gwendolyn L. Smith.

During his residency, Seth will look for inspiration from the Langdon house and gardens and the surrounding area to create a new work.

Open Studio Hours

Seth’s studio is in the South Lodge at Governor John Langdon House. It is open to Langdon House visitors on Saturdays and Sundays from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m, through August 25.
