May is Preservation Month, and this year it coincides with the fiftieth anniversary of the passage of the National Historic Preservation Act in 1966. This federal statute established the regulatory framework for the activities of historic preservation.
Its passage signaled that preservation had matured as a focus of public policy. It paved the way for recognition of historic preservation as a field of professional endeavor, not just an avocational pursuit.
