Inside the Collections Care Project: A book repository for your everyday needs

Sep 30, 2014

Currently the team is moving a variety of domestic goods including eyeglasses, brushes, toilet paper holders, and this personal book repository.

Patented by R.L. Dodge in 1870, the wooden book repository has three hinged drop drawers that allow for easy access to some of your favorite books.

Though patented in 1870, the book repository didn’t gain popularity until the mid-twentieth century. Due to its compact size, it was commonly used as storage for large telephone directories. It could easily be placed near a telephone and accessed when a caller needed to look up a phone number.

Check back next week for another highlight from Historic New England’s vast collection.
