Historic New England helps document Rhode Island furniture

The Yale University ArtGallery recently launched the RhodeIsland Furniture Archive, the first comprehensive online database of Rhode Island-madefurniture.

“The Rhode Island Furniture Archive…documents furniture and furniture making in Rhode Island from the time of the firstEuropean colonization in 1636 through the early nineteenth century,” according to the Yale University Art Gallery. “Bringingtogether records of surviving furniture, individuals who owned it, and knownfurniture makers, this archive aims to provide a complete account of thespecific culture, local variations, and artistic practices surrounding thefirst two centuries of furniture making in Rhode Island.”

With many pieces in our collection that were made or usedin Rhode Island,Historic New England is proud to participate in the project. Thirteen chairs, chests of drawers, and desks from the Historic NewEngland collection are currently highlighted on the website.
