A cradle quilt from Historic New England’s extensive textile collection is on display in Homefront & Battlefield: Quilts & Context in the Civil War, an exhibition at the American Textile History Museum in Lowell, Massachusetts.
A description of the quilt and a transcription of the poem in its center were in the January 2, 1837, issue of The Liberator, Boston’s abolitionist newspaper, when the paper printed a notice of items for sale at an Anti-Slavery Fair. These fairs, organized by the Boston Female Anti-Slavery Society, were successful in raising awareness of the abolitionists’ cause and funds to support their goals.
Homefront & Battlefield uses quilts, clothing, and other textile-related artifacts, images, and quotations from diaries and letters to tell moving and personal stories. Learn more.
