Historic New England recently acquired the painting Twilight Seascape by Alfred Thompson Bricher (1837-1908).
Largely self-taught, Bricher studied at the Lowell Institute in Boston, and painted with Albert Bierstadt, William Morris Hunt, Gabriella Eddy, and Benjamin Champney. He is associated with White Mountain art and the Hudson River School. He spent his summers painting New England landscapes and seascapes and made frequent trips to Grand Manan Island off the Maine coast in the Bay of Fundy. He exhibited at, among others, the Boston Athenaeum; the National Academy of Design, New York; the Brooklyn Art Association; and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art, Philadelphia.
“This is an outstanding seascape to add to Historic New England’s collections,” said Senior Curator Nancy Carlisle. “We plan to install the painting at the Eustis Estate (1878) in Milton, Massachusetts. William and Edith Eustis decorated their house with maritime and landscape scenes of this same period. A painting like this would have reminded them of the view from their home on Cape Cod.” The Eustis Estate opens to the public in May 2017.
