Description

This collection consists of reference files, photographs and other materials belonging to the former Massachusetts Film Office (MFO) and directors. The files and images were once used for location scouting, to aid out of town film producers and artists in finding the proper settings necessary for their films. In 2007, members of the MFO catalogued each of the 38 boxes in the collection based on their value to current film productions. Historic New England has largely maintained this organization. The collection is arranged into three series: towns and cities, subjects, and “schools.” The photographs are arranged aphetically within these series, with a few exceptions. The collection was processed following the tenants of “More Product, Less Process” and therefore has been minimally described.

Historical/Biographical Note

Historical/Biographical Note

The Massachusetts Film Office was created as a part of the Office of Economic Development in 1979. The office worked to bring film productions into Massachusetts, by providing support and tax incentives. The Film Office photographed many landscapes, cities, and institutions throughout Massachusetts, as a way to help out of town film producers select Massachusetts venues for filming. The Film Office was shut down due to budget cuts in 2002, but was reopened in 2007.
