Photographs by Elise Tyson Vaughan, compiled by her into four albums, documenting, among many other subjects, the grounds at Hamilton House, South Berwick, Maine which she purchased on the advice of Sarah Orne Jewett. Some photographs can be reproduced from her original negatives which were found stored at Hamilton house. The albums themselves were donated by Isabella Hopkinton Halsted, 998 Memorial Drive, Cambridge following the suggestion of Mrs. Alan Emmet whose research on the landscaping of the Hamilton House made use of the photographs in these albums. Mrs. Halsted identified various persons in the photographs by means of a code which is filed with album A. Prior to donation she removed some pages of personal interest to the Curtis family of Boston and Manchester, Mass. Mrs. Greely Curtis and Mrs. Vaughan were close friends. Like Mrs. Curtis, Mrs. Vaughan was an amateur photographer of skill. The majority of the photographs in these albums are of excellent quality, both as documentary and pictorial works. They are are not securely dated, but seem to have been taken in the late 1890s, early 1900s. Among them are photographs of Sarah Orne Jewett and William S. Appleton. Album C has photos of house and gardens of Hamilton House and Jewett House. Also winter activities in Franconia, NH, Bertram House in Philadelphia, 314 Dartrmouth Street, Boston, the wedding of Edith Appleton, April 17, 1904, Appleton house, Boston, Atlantic City, haying in South Berwick, and winter scenes.
