The file of color advertisements was created from the clippings file donated by William Sumner Appleton, founder of the Society for the Preservation of New Antiquities, known today as Historic New England. The collection dates between 1920 and 1927. The ads were extracted from the clippings file if they were composed of more than one color in their composition and they promoted products or services.

Color Advertisements finding aid.
Two series of numbers were used in cataloguing these materials: one for those with artists' signatures and one for those without signatures. Ads with signatures were numbered with an A (i.e., 1A, 2A, etc.); those without signatures were numbered in a different sequence.
Subject headings were created, most of which center around architectural topics, as do the majority of the ads. There is also a large collection of automobile advertisements included in the file, organized by the names of the companies which built the vehicles.
There is an alphabetical index to the artists included in the collection, including those signatures which were either illegible or which consisted of artists' initials.
