This photograph was taken in 1885 or 1886 during the residency of William Sumner Appleton, Sr., son of Nathan Appleton, before the sale of the house in 1886 to Arthur Lyman. A note on the back indicates that the portrait shown is John Singleton Copley's portrait of Mrs. Richard Crowninshield Derby (Martha) as St. Cecilia playing the harp.
