The balloon-like flowers in large baskets are typical of Marblehead-area sampler designs. Miriam Alley lived her entire life in Lynn, Massachusetts. She may have attended school in nearby Marblehead or a Marblehead-trained instructor moved to Lynn and opened a school using similar patterns and techniques.
