Description

This bonnet is constructed from rows of braided cream-colored horsehair stitched together. The bonnet is trimmed with ivory taffeta ribbon brocaded with brown and yellow floral sprays, artificial flowers constructed from cut feathers and wax. White silk ribbon ties with stripes and scalloped edge are stitched to corners. The interior brim is lined with cotton lace and the crown is lined with net (later additions). The brim edge is stiffened with wire.

Handwritten paper notes pinned to lining (see file): 1) ""Bonnet - 1820-30 / once the property of Mrs. William Brown / whose husband owned and was / proprietor of the Eagle House / Haverhill Mass.-------/"". 2) ""Note - lining of bonnet was taken out / by someone who borrowed it to wear / original lining was a shirred tulle / color of bonnet / original strings would have been / same as bonnet, these are old / but not the first ones. / H.E.L."".
