Walk Right In 11/98-3/99 In the mid-nineteenth century, brightly colored textiles dyed with new aniline dyes were sometimes incorporated into fancy footwear. The Englishwoman's Domestic Magazine cautioned readers that shoes with scarlet rosettes were to be worn "only on occassions when a dressy toilet is required."
