Label

One of many views of the early United States highlighted in the online exhibit "Patriotic America."
This platter shows the Massachusetts state seal adopted in 1780. The state motto, Ense petit placidum sub libertate quietam, or By the sword we seek peace (but only) under liberty - is attributed to the 17th century English patriot Algernon Sydney, whose writings, it is thought, influenced the earliest American patriots.
