Description

A 9 1/2" x 11 1/2" bound red album containing 192 black and white photographs, labeled with dates ranging from June 1891 to September 1895. Subject matter includes beach scenes and shoreline landscapes, sailboats at sea,exterior of individual houses, portraits of children and women sitting, horse and carriages. Most photographs are unlabeled, depicting unidentified locations, while others are hand-labeled with blue pen or with black ink. Labeled locations include Howland Park, Fisherman's Beach, and the Mudge Estate- the summer mansion of nineteenth-centruy businessman Enoch Mudge and family - Swampscott, Massachusetts; the isle of Shoals, Maine; Marblehead, including the exterior of the home of Elbridge Gerry, fifth Vice President of the U.S. and a signer of the Declaration of Independence; Salem, Massachusetts, including the Hawthorne birthplace, the Old Witch House, and The Phillips School House; and Niagara Falls, including the Cataract house c. 1891 and the old Niagara Falls Suspension Bridge ( 1855-1897), designed by Brooklyn Bridge engineer John Roebling. A photo of the "Plaisted House, Jackson, New Hampshire" falls outside the bulk date range, labeled 1884. All photographs are of good quality.
