Description

Rectangular, horizontal format depicts the Moses Kimball clipper barque in full sail with hand-colored? flags including the American flag and several small nautical flags, as well as a signature flag lettered MOSES KIMBALL (backwards). Passengers appear on the deck and a steam trawler, along with other sailing vessels, appears in the distance.

Inscription

Printed in ink below the image: ""REPRESENTATION OF THE HALF CLIPPER BARQUE MOSES KIMBALL"" A jelly label on the upper left of the mat reverse: ""Moses Kimball, brother of David Kimball/ great grandfather of Bertram Kimball/ Little. Moses born in Newburyport, 1809,/ early education in Rockport. After a/ year in his father's store there he/came to Boston. This vessel named/ for him as a prominent citizen."" On a second jelly label, also on the mat reverse: ""The old New England Museum was for/ sale late in the 1830s(?), and Moses/ with his brother David purchased its/pictures and curiosities. Opened the Lowell/Museum. The next year opened the Boston Museum, corner of Tremont & Bromfield Sts./ (ref. Ballou's Pictorial, Saturday, March 29, 1856)
