"Old Oak Chair"


Design drawing titled "Old Chair of Oak" rendered in ink on trace. Front and side views are shown. Jacobean Revival-style arm chair has high rectangular back; arched crest rail with round ends; rectangular stiles with scrolled brackets at crest rail; back with arched panel; flat seat with deep seat rails and rectangular front corner blocks; square straight rear legs; front legs with ring, vasiforn and block turnings; and rectangular H-stretcher. Chair features extensive carved ornamentation including: flat carving on arched crest reminscent of a tombstone with angel head and wings; repeating geometric motifs; and palm tree and foliage in arched panel. Additional carved decoration includes bas-relief female torsos on stiles; protruding heads on front corner blocks; and repeating geometric motifs on seat rails and stretchers. Title is handprinted on drawing. Stamped at lower right side but partially cut off is: "To be returned to / A. H. Davenport Co. / 299 Fifth Avenue / New York, NY." Drawing has long horizontal tear approximately one inch from top.
