This series contains photographs, correspondence, clippings, articles, and research notes on paintings and other two dimensional artwork owned by the Littles and others. The series also includes files on related topics, such as articles by Nina Fletcher Little on paintings. There are many written requests to Nina Fletcher Little soliciting her assistance in attributing paintings to specific artists, demonstrating Little's reputation and expertise in the field of American painting.
The papers were found arranged in five letterboxes, one binder, as well as several loose files that Selina Fletcher Little arranged with the boxes and binder. The formal series arrangement described below is based on this original order, with subseries for each of the letterboxes, the binder, and a subseries for loose files.
Each of the five letterboxes contained a stack of loose papers sorted into several alphabetical dividers. The organizational efforts of Selina Fletcher Little were evident through her post-it notes, paperclips, and edits made to the indices written on the front of each box. The post-it notes attached to clusters of papers made clear the subject heading under which the papers were filed. As is the case throughout this collection, paperclips and staples have been replaced with inner folders.
While the papers were removed from the letterboxes in order to provide archival housing, their exact arrangement in those boxes has been preserved. The actual letterboxes, located at the end of the collection, now contain only the alphabetical dividers, though they also feature handwritten indices and other notes written on the inside cover.
