Description

Pair of patens worn to protect shoes by raising the wearer above the mud. Each paten is constructed from a metal ring riveted to a pair of metal rods. Each rod is attached to the carved wooden sole. Leather toe covers and instep ties hold the paten to the shoe.

Walk Right In 11/98-3/99 Iron rings riveted to the soles of these pattens lifted the wearer above the dirty or muddy street. In 1835, a visitor to Nantucket complained, "The streets are very sandy. . . when I walk I return with with my shoes full of dirt."
