Rolled sample of "The Montespan Design" wallpaper from the Chellis Estate, Wellesley Hills, Massachusetts. Large-scale damask-style pattern with long repeat roller-printed in white on brown ingrain paper. The pattern consists of two alternating elaborate floral vignettes. One vignette is a vase of flowers. A swag of acorns and leaves is suspended in air behind it by butterflies. The vase rests on a carpet or screen with cord and tassels flanked by birds. Floral swags, which frame the vignette below, hang from flowering foliate scrolls. The next vignette is an urn containing fruit, flowers and wheat shafts. Squirrels sit on the urn's handles and birds fly among the wheat shafts. Below the urn hang acanthus leaf figures flanked by peacocks. Swags of lace ribbon hang from the acanthus leaves. In the selvedge is printed "The Montespan Design" and the English "Reg. No. 504424" indicating a design date of 1907.
