Description

A black and white view of the Cape Cod Canal project managers watching as workmen cut the final dike, blending the waters of Buzzard's Bay and Cape Cod Bay. The image shows August Belmont directing the workmen, while William Barclay Parsons looks on at the scene. Immediately after the picture was taken, Belmont and Parsons took a symbolic picture as they shook hands over the stream that made Cape Cod an island.

From Images of America: Cape Cod Canal, pg. 62: "August Belmont conducted another inspection tour of the Cape Cod Canal on April 21, 1914... With some digging, a trickle of tidal water was sent down a sluiceway from one side to the other."
