Description

Wallpaper fragment from Wareham, Massachusetts. Striped paper block-printed in black and white on ochre ground. The primary stripe depicts a stylized, straight flower stem with open blooms divided by three sets of leaves. This figure is printed in the negative so that the block-printed black stripe forms the flower figure , which is colored by the unprinted ochre ground. Flanking the primary stripe are a narrow band of white block-printed, repeating flowers and fronds. Between the primary stripe are fields of narrow, repeating vertical stripes that consist of dotted single lines set with paired black petals and a single white "bloom" above. These stylized blooms and petals are set as staggered half-drops.This paper is the top layer of three, still affixed to lower layers. Probably from the Captain John Kendrick House.
